In the Sound Garden with C.9ine - interview by Thando Mazibuko
When two worlds collide, disaster is often expected but C.9ine has managed to prove this theory wrong. Skitzo (a crazy, free spirited young man) and Danny (a rather grounded guy) formed C.9ine in the year 2004. This production duo has since grown from ordinary ‘kasi guys’ to internationally recognized producers. Their Deep house sounds have taken them from hustling to getting a record label to digital releases in a space of 5 years.

They have worked with international names such as Fish Go Deep, UPZ, and Gene King. Their tracks have been featured in the Harley and Muscle compilation, Deep House 5th Chapter. None of them ever imagined this rapid growth and exposure but it was through their record label, BBB RECORDS, that their dreams of becoming internationally acclaimed artists became a reality.

These realities have their own challenges however just like the recent split in the label which saw many people jumping ship to another label. They agree that it affected them a bit since those were people they had worked with for years and were now forced to choose sides. I applaud them though for having the courage to make the right decision which was to stay true to their label and remain with BBB RECORDS which has helped get them this far.

With Liquideep getting so much attention and C.9ine being in the same stable with them we would expect that they would feel a lot of pressure to deliver but Skitzo obviously has a different view on this.  “Our music is different from Liquideep and at the end of the day we complement each other and assist our stable BBB into reaching out to a bigger target market”.

Well, that does not seem to be much of a mission since House Afrika Sessions 4, which also features Dancing on Keys with tracks produced by C.9ine,  sold about 40 000 copies. I guess they are well on their way to reaching that BIGGER target market. It is clear that their ‘fan base’ has expanded and to further captivate the hearts of the music lovers and fans, C.9ine is currently working on an album which will be called SOUND GARDEN. Unfortunately persistence did not work this time since Skitzo and Danny would not name drop on who it is they feature on the album but “huge surprises must be expected by music lovers” so says Danny. I sure hope these are ‘platinum material surprises’ but knowing the music that they have produced in the past, we will not be disappointed.

Besides the Deep house projects that they are involved in, they have recently been approached by Swiss TV to produce ‘Cinematic Sound Designs’ for Hidden Heart. A story about Chris Barnard and Hamilton Nake and the first heart transplant. This is a film that will be premiered in Zurich, Bern, Basel Germany, South Africa and a lot of other countries all over the world. With so much exposure and recognition, it is amazing how they stay humble and modest. They seem just like ordinary guys when you meet them at a party or on the streets but hey, i am not complaining since arrogance eliminates followers.

When asked about what they think of this hype over Ancestral house Skitzo answered by saying “Ancestral house……. Jo! It kicks serious party karate on the dance floor and it has helped a lot of producers to gain exposure all over the world, no doubt about that”. It is good to know that there are still Deep House producers who appreciate and acknowledge that there are other genres besides the genre that they produce. A lot of DJs and producers find it difficult to accept this and for that I commend them.

Their vision for the future does not only lie in the deep house scene but they want to grow the C.9ine brand and venture into other horizons. This business minded duo has taken C.9ine to the corporate level. Their new additions include C.9ine GRAPHICS (where their new logo was designed), C9ine sound and lighting and C.9ine driving school. Skitzo is also well on the way to being a DJ. With all of these developments however, MUSIC still remains at the top of the list for Skitzo and Danny.

So if your soul needs a little feeding, do go out and buy the C.9ine album Sound Garden in August.
